Quick question: Is it okay to help your mother-in-law in the kitchen on your first-...you know where I’m going already.
My unsolicited two cents: Do what works for you and stop recycling the same topic every five market days. We have a country to fix.
I hope you’ve had a great week. Besides the task I’ve left unattended and dragging with me into the weekend, my week has been solid. 🤝
A heads-up: I’ll be doing a lot of famzing in today's newsletter.
From drumming in class and sealing his name as one of the “class terrorists” in a secondary school in Ijebu Ode to being on a Burna Boy album in 2022, Kvng Vinci looks set to become the next big thing in the highly competitive and talented Nigerian music industry.
But who’s this new boy on the block, and why is he so special?
It takes something special for anyone to pull off what he has pulled without any label backing - producing the biggest TikTok sound of 2021. But he always had a knack for pulling off surprises and unbelievable things. Let’s take it back to Vinci’s secondary school days. Walk with me.
Within our first few encounters, I could already tell he enjoys breaking the rules rather than playing by them. He first wowed me the first time he played the Flute. I had seen people play the Flute before but never had I seen anyone display the level of control Dotun, as we called him in school, shown over it. It was surprising that he could play so many songs after previously thinking the Flute was one boring and limited musical instrument.
He would drum in class as the other classmates freestyled. A full creative who could play the drums, draw, play any instruments, and make the whole class burst into laughter. I always thought people like that were the bravest. However, I couldn’t call him a genius because I had a narrow scope of what a genius is.
His genius was clear to me when Mr John entered the classroom on a Tuesday morning for his dreaded mathematics class. It was the first few of senior secondary school, and we’d been on Logarithm and Indicies. He heads straight to the board, ignoring our greeting while at it, and writes 4 Logarithm questions on the board. As usual, he expects us to have solved all five questions before he finishes writing them on the board, or we get beat. We always got beat. It’d been his MO for weeks, and we just assumed that’s how he gets his students fired up; truth be told, it worked.
But this one time, a boy named Dotun beat his time and solved all the questions. From that day on, I started to pay close attention to him and saw him blitzed through Physics and Maths questions like it was nothing. Only then did I realise how much of a genius he was.
Prior to last year, when he dropped Squid game Amapiano remix, which went viral on Tiktok and remains one of the biggest and most sampled sounds today, he had already been dropping snippets of his beats on Instagram. I knew it was only a matter of time before the industry caught up with his talent because talents like such are rare.
It was a proud Dad moment listening to Different Size. I screamed and jumped for joy in my room before going on social media to make noise about him. Kvng Vinci is a breath of fresh air, a break from the norm and one to look out for. The Vinci era is well and truly upon us.
Brace yourself!
This has been my easiest newsletter to write yet. I urge you all to invest in his stocks before it’s later than it already is. See you next time, and have a sweet weekend! 😉
